Executive Summary: Vacation’s Impact on the Workplace

New research by the Society of Human Resources Management suggests a strong link between vacation time and employee performance and wellness.

In a survey of 481 members, SHRM found that HR professionals link use of vacation time with higher-performing employees, greater productivity and less lost work due to sickness.

The survey also suggests that most employees fail to use all of their available vacation time — a behavior across the board, but significantly more pronounced among employers who allow employees to roll over some or all time off.
